One of the really nice stops we have on the Dewsweeper Tour is this amazing, historical golf course now in the MetroParks, Manikiki. This is terrific, beautiful golf. And make no mistake, this is tough golf as well. Manakiki is an old course that at one time was private course designed by the incredible golf course designer Donald Ross. Professional events were once played here, and so did some of the games great players in the 50's and 60's. This is not a long course, about 6,200 yards but very tough.
This is nestled in hills and trees and winds its way around and flows nicely from first hole to last. Manakiki is not a long golf course but do not let that fool you. This is tree lined, with plenty of protective sand traps, some water, and tons of sloping fairways that make second shots very challenging. There are few flat lies on many fairways. The greens are fantastic with great speed, and true rolls. As where they are mostly flat as compared to the fairways, the greens are tough. And today the pin placements were difficult.
Joe Red continued to do what he has been doing. Getting off to slower starts, but finding it more and more as the round wears on. Red shot a 48 on the front, but rebounded very well by tossing in a birdie on 12, (of which we were treated to hard to watch celebration dance) and a bunch of pars to steady the ship shooting a nice 42 on the back. His play got better and better the further we got into the round. good recovery.
Tex had a tough time off the tee today, and that has not been a problem lately, but we all have those rounds. Here, you must drive the ball well as the second shots are tough enough, as this is a second shot course. We've all been there, and today was his turn. But, he putted the ball well, and that's not small feat here. He hung in there posting and even 100. He won't be the only one that shoots that here. This is a tough course.
Beef blistered that front mixing in a nice bunch of pars, along with a birdie on 5, and shot a 39 on the front. Well done. The back caught up to Beef though. After a great par on the brutal number 10, a couple of doubles found their way on the card and string of bogeys too, giving him 45 on the back, 84 on the day. Pretty good on this course, although he was in a place to shoot a bit better, but it's tough out there.
I birdied the first hole for the second straight week, and that was fun. Then took a ridiculous double on 2, and a even sillier triple on 8 giving me 44 on the front. 5 over on just 2 holes! Then the back was better as I played a bit more consistently firing a 41 giving me 85 total. I too could have shot better, but let a low number slip away. 2, 3-putts, and those two goofs in the front. But this is tough and these thing happen.
Course highlights? Number 2, nice uphill par 4, 350 yards. Numbers 6 through 10. Great holes that can destroy your round if you're not careful. Especially number 10, brutal par 4, thin, uphill, tree lined, very difficult. 8 is no bargain either, 375, par 4, thin, tough fairway, brutal driving hole, very professional difficulty, both holes. And the fantastic number 18, one of the most beautiful holes you will ever play. Downhill, uphill par 4 going back to the clubhouse.
Manakiki is tough, but fair. This is not beginners golf, so this may not be the best place to be introduced to the game. But if your game is fairly good, and you don't mind an drive to a wonderful golf destination, this is totally worth it. This is one the best courses we play all year.
Scores
Beef - 84
Wynn - 85
Joe Red - 90
Tex - 100
Next week we tee it up and make our Dewsweeper debut at The Dales Course at Tamoshanter in Canton!

MOVIE REVIEW - When The Game Stands Tall
The new high school football bio-pic, When The Game Stands Tall is out this week and sadly it fumbles. You know when you see a ton of hype before a movie on TV? That usually means there is trouble - and there is.
Let's defend it up front first though. This is a great real story, that focuses somewhat on a really amazing man and football coach, Bob Ladouceur at De La Salle High School in Oakland, California. He deserves a much better movie than this, and that is the shame of this whole thing. This falls under the category of "big chance missed." This ends up being formula.
Ladouceur has been the head football coach at this high school for over 30 years. De La Salle has won 151 games in a row which is the longest winning streak in any organized sport ever. The streak comes to an end, plus the coach has a heart attack, and one of the teams most popular players is killed in a senseless shooting. How will these young men adapt and cope with all this at once? That is the story they put out there for you to think you will see. And you will. But sadly, they missed the boat.
The real amazing story is of Ladouceur. He is an incredible football coach that in today's world is a total throwback. He believes deeply that his role in this world is to prepare young men for life with football as the catalyst and not the main focus. Many of the kids he coaches are from horrible backgrounds in blighted areas of Oakland. His priorities are profound and somehow he successfully transfers this to kids who would seem reluctant to absorb such a message.
The sad part is that the script is so bad that they fail to really convey that to us until the very end. The written dialogue is very bad, even clunky at times. The story wanders into areas that it doesn't belong time and time again. This needed a better write, and a much sharper focus. And maybe the biggest flub is that for a movie about a guy that honestly believes and preaches that his whole focus truly is NOT football - there is a whole lot of football in this movie. Seemingly endless football scenes that make us grow weary. But, you have to have them for fans to go.
Ironically, the ending credits are where were really learn how great a guy he is. Wonderful footage of the actual coach preaching his beliefs in great candor. Then an amazing endorsement from NFL legend John Madden calling Ladouceur the greatest football coach at any level in the country. ANY level. Sad that the movie makers didn't catch on till it's too late.
There are some nice elements to this, and there are a few emotive parts that keep you engaged, but it's not what it should have been. This has been compared to Remember The Titans, but it's not as good. This also was badly cast in it's major roles, Titans has Denzel Washington, this does not. This needed some star power, and has none.
When The Game Stands Tall. Bob Ladouceur is an inspiration and an incredible man. He deserves better than this. Hope to see a documentary on him sometime. We could really get to know him.

MOVIE REVIEW - If I Stay
The new teen-drama, If I Stay opened up over the weekend to a decent box office take, but to very mild, if not unkind reviews.
This has a whole lot going against it right from the get-go. I am almost astonished that this was thrown into theaters in mid-August. Everything about this movie screams late October in its feel and look. Being honest, this is a downer of a movie that will not be everyone's cup of tea. So it may have been wiser to wait till we all were feeling a bit more sentimental and reflective before releasing this on us. And as good as this book may have been, this is an awkward adaptation to a movie.
This is the story of a teen cello-prodigy, Mia (Chloe Grace Moretz). She is the eldest child of a "hippie" mom and dad in Portland, Oregon. As where the young parents are free spirits and basically grown flower children, Mia is a very reserved if not outright conservative young woman who is immensely dedicated to her musical craft. She lives with her parents and her little brother, Teddy. And on one fateful day, the other three are killed in a terrible car crash.
Mia is still alive and fighting for her life. This movie is then told as she is on life support, and we flashback to the months leading up to this moment. Mia's relationship with her family, and the first love of her life, her boyfriend, Adam (Jamie Blackley). Adam is a bit older than Mia and is the front man in his own rock band. So clearly we are getting the opposites attract thing here, as well as a bit of just typical sullen teen romance.
Mia has applied to Julliard, auditioned for them, and she is waiting on her acceptance or rejection letter to arrive at the time of the accident. She and Adam are having the all too common relationship problems that teens in love do, so this run of life changing events has that as a backdrop. Will this make them stronger, or will this be the end of not only the relationship, but will Mia even live?
This is a pretty heavy movie with little wiggle room for any room to breathe normally. This deals with heavy matter and you need to know this as you enter the theater. This has little to no levity, and that is not simply not eveybody's cup of tea. This will be very appealing to the young romantics out there who can't get enough of forbidden, or ill-advised love in movies. This has elements of originality that make it somewhat fresh. I mean, how many movies have you seen that deal with a teen cellist? And by the way, the solo cello playing you hear and see in this movie, is simply fantastic.
But this has a few real problems. In no real order, it feels very long at times, and draggy in others. Also the lip-synching and the pretend rock music playing scenes are agonizing to watch. Complete over acting, and really lousy original songs from Adam's up and coming rock band are insulting. This was a chance to make a better movie. Instead of 80 second versions of really bad and cliche' songs, maybe full versions of really good ones. Those scenes would have been so much better, instead they are laughable.
Also, some weak writing and limited character development is an issue as well. And at the end, one of the really big scenes where all the worlds come together in flashback form?. There's a chance to create something really special musically and visually, they blow it, and make it average at best.
I like Moretz though. I am a fan of hers and it seems certain that eventually the projects will catch up to her appeal and talent. She is a fresh face on screen, and there are better movies up ahead for her, including a real chance with Denzel Washington in The Equalizier in a couple weeks.
Kudos though to veteran actor Stacey Keach, who plays Mia's grandfather in a small but central role. He holds court, and shows everyone on set how to act. Well done and good to see him back on the big screen.
If I Stay. Moretz is good, movie is mediocre at best.

DVD - What's New Streaming and on DVD August 26
This week there are a few new choices for you to stream or shove in the DVD machine. The next few weeks will have far more than this week, as the early summer movies will make their way out.
Keep in mind, we only feature major movies here, and not straight to DVD or TV shows making their way to DVD. I will link you back to my original review (where applicable) to give you all the info you need to make the best decision before you rent, buy, or hit pay on your remote
New This Week
Blended -
Adam Sandler and this time he drug along Drew Barrymore again for more terrible comedy. BTW - Comedies are supposed to be funny.
Belle -
This got marginal theater play, but was reviewed quite well. A timed piece about race and royalty.
Jersey Shore Massacre -
I have no idea that this is, but the title is so bad, it must be terrible.

The Thunderbird Hills 36 hole complex is one of the real fun stops on the Dewsweeper Tour. We played and reviewed the newer South Course a few weeks ago, and this week we teed it up on the heritage North Course. We love both of these 18's and they are very different.
The North Course is a tree lined mature golf course checking in at about 6,500 yards. It has rolling fairways, wonderful greens, with few water hazards, and no sand. But the the rough can be challenging especially when wet or damp. This is a course that plays uphill, and down, with undulated fairway lies, and relatively flat, but very nice greens. This place, along with The South, is always in really nice shape and the pace of play is terrific. This is worth a few minute drive.
We had a slight delay this week as some rain moved through early, but the course soaked it up well, and the course played really nicely. As much rain we we got, the greens still rolled pretty fast, and extremely well.
It was fun to watch Joe Red play today. After he got off to a slow start, he simply hit the ball better and better as the round wore on. After a few tough holes culminating on number 6, he then found his stroke and was piping the ball down the middle, and making good shots overall. He found the consistency that has been with him the past few weeks, and settled down and played good golf. After a tough start shooting a 47 on the front, with all of the damage early, he threw down a 41 on the back for an 88 on the day. Not bad after stumbling out of the blocks.
Tex conversely got off to a good start and was playing some pretty good golf. Driving the ball well, and making solid second shots. Tex also has 8, 1 putts on the day, including a streak of 5 in a row on the front. Also 11 putts on the front - sizzling! But he like many started to find trouble on holes 9, 10, 11, 12. A really rough stretch on this course, and the scoring got away from him. But as you'll learn later, this is a tough stretch. After Tex tossed down a solid 44 on the front, he found 53 on the back. Mostly because of two really brutal holes. 10, and 12. 97 on the day.
Beef's game is getting better all the time too. Beef had the highlight of the day, if not the season on #6, a short par 4. After a bomb drive, he chipped in an eagle from about 50 yards (2). He also had a beautiful 30 foot downhill daddy gagger putt on number 11 for a great birdie. Those helped erase a couple of tough holes, and helped him shoot a very nice 41/41 for 82 on the day. A solid round here.
I got off to a hot start. I birdied the first 2 holes, and was on my way. I shot a fun 36 on the front, even par. My first even round of the year. On the back I fired a 43, for 79 on the day. My big problem was like Tex, number 10. I finished 7 over on the day, 4 on that one single hole for a brutal 8! Then a horrible 3 putt on 11. But I got hot and parred 5 of the last 6, and saved my round.
Course highlights? Number 7 a really tough par 4, long and doggy right, 405 yards. Number 9, tough from every angle par 5, with a tiny green. Number 10 (the hardest par 4 we play all year). 400 tough drive to a raised high green, over mush to a blind pin on a huge green. BRUTAL HOLE (we were collectively 10 over on that hole). Number 12 another tough par 5 with all kinds of trouble. Number 13, a very tough driving par 4 400 yards to a raised green. But there are three par 4's that make this able to score on. Number 4, 6, and number 17 all drivable and both are there for scoring. But the key to this hole is the tough stretch from 7 through 13. You must survive those holes in the middle.
This is a really fun place to play where you can score if you mange the course well and make good decisions. The course is always nice, and the facilities are really strong. Service is terrific, and rates are very good. And they do have a rewards card system that rewards repeated play.
Thunderbird Hills North. Great golf. Fine place to play, worth the drive. Play all 36!!
This week the tour rolls on and we head to Willoughby to play the fantastic Manakiki in the MetroParks. Another one of the highlights of the tour.

MOVIE REVIEW - The Giver
Here comes a great example of a really good and successful book that school kids love becoming a movie. And shouldn't have.
This 1993 book has been, and is a favorite of many. But this is a great example of a movie that gets lost in translation - big time. Sometimes the mind can simply paint a better picture than Hollywood, and that's certainly the case here. Although this really didn't, and won't fine a gigantic audience, it will find a dedicated one as loyalties can run deep when remembering a favorite book.
This is in the future. After "The Ruin." Society has been reborn by the Elders, and now "sameness" is the way of life. Everyone is exactly equal and live the exact same life, in the exact same house, and clothes. And all memories of the past are erased from society. Daily injections are given to make everyone numb, and without emotion. There is no disagreement, no conflict, or drama, music or anything really great. Everyone dresses the same. No feelings, no sex, no love. Families are arranged, including raising children not born by the raising parents. In short, life really stinks.
The only wrinkle is, that one person is chosen to store all of the memories of the past in their mind, and he must keep to himself. Why? I'm not really sure why, since the Elders are so bent on making sure that no one ever knows about it. But The Giver (Jeff Bridges) is that man. And his job is to transfer and share all of the memories of the worlds past to his new and younger protege' Jonus (Brenton Thwaites). But can someone who knows nothing except "sameness" and literal total equality handle the fact the world was once a far more conflicted and complicated place? And what will he do with all that secret info? Will he attempt to share it with the world and restore the beauty once known?
First off, this is boring for the most part. And it is a bit disturbing to see in front of you what actual and literal total equality would look like. This is filmed in a black and white, and gray settings, with large CG sets and backdrops. This is yet another look at a horrible and gloomy future, that will make anyone want to not have children - starting today.
But in its defense, this may actually be far more relevant today than when it was written 20 years ago. With the NSA scandal, and all of our privacy seemingly under siege by various government agencies and foreign governments, it does strike a uncomfortable chord within. This shows what happens when all privacy is lost, and and or surrendered to the government, and what they then choose to do with it. And that's an eye opener for sure.
But in the end, it still may be better to view this in your minds eye while reading the book, as opposed to watching it play out on the big screen. In addition to Bridges, Katie Holmes stars, Taylor Swift with a small part, and somehow they managed convince Meryl Streep to do this as the Head Elder. But even if you put makeup on a frog, it's still a frog. And big stars can not save this.
The Giver. Some things should just be left alone, like this book.

DVD - New to Streaming and DVD This Week August 19
Short list this week of new DVD and streaming choices for you. Both will look great on your home theater system. And both are relatively tame except for the very young.
Keep in mind we only feature major motion pictures here and not TV series making it's way to DVD, games, or straight to video releases. Where applicable, I will link you back to my original review from the box office run, to help you make an informed decision before you commit time and money into the movie.
New This Week
The Amazing Spiderman 2
We simply can not seem to get enough Spiderman, no matter who is starring in it or directing. Could look very nice on your huge screen and surround sound for an evening of fun.
The Quiet Ones
Strange and out there spooky movie that had a moment of tow that can jolt. Not fabulous, but not a wash out either.

MOVIE REVIEW - The Expendables 3
This version of this series, and this entire series is by no means perfect. But so what? This and they are complete escapism. So let's pop some popcorn.
The Expendables 3 in many ways is not a whole lot different that the first two. And then again, it is very different. The same basic cast is back, Stallone, Statham, Li, Schwarzenegger, Crews, Lundgren, Coutre, and others. But this time they bring along, Kelsey Grammar, Harrison Ford, Antonio Bandaras, Wesley Snipes and even Mel Gibson. So about every single former action movie hero is in this movie. There was also rumors that this will be the final one, but I'm guessing not, as this is set up well for more.
What they have done is pretty darn smart. They have always made fun of their own ages, and that's part of its "charm." It's never taken too seriously. But now they have cultivated a new and younger band of Expendables who have newer and more relevant skill sets to help our band of mercenary doo-gooders fight the "off the books" cases they take on. They include but are not limited to MMA Champion, Rhonda Rousey. It nice awareness that there has to be a changing of the guard at some part. We now have the largest band of Expendables we have ever had.
The plot is not really important for this article, as it is a popcorn movie. This is what it is. It's action packed, it has violence, and long action scenes. This is not a movie for everyone for sure. But from a movie making standpoint, this series is pretty savvy. They know who their audience is, and they are looking forward to who they want it to be. Always humor mixed in with the action, and always self depreciating humor.
But it's more than that. Stallone and crew have figured out and found a niche. Since superhero movies are all the rage, they are cashing in on this trend without many even noticing. This is a superhero movie where people are actually the superheros and not some flying robot, or web shooting kid, or the like. The story lines are not the "end of times" themed so many computer generated action flicks are either. They have a plot line that is exaggerated for sure, but it's not the end of the world. And being honest, the violence is on par with most of the other superhero movies that are thought safer. Certainly no worse. The language is surprisingly tame, and somehow they figure out how to get everyone on camera.
Should be noted too, these always have an August release date to allow all of the other animated movies, superhero movies, and early summer releases to blow over and clear out, so they can clean up and they do. That is really smart. For many, me included, these are guilty pleasure movies that take no time to make social commentary, or try to change the world, or to dazzle us with as many computer animation tricks the geeks can come up with. Sure, this is actiony but it's honest. And this is straight forward. If you like action movies, this is amazingly refreshing as it is more like the action movies once were a=made
The Expendables 3. This is fast paced and fun. A guilty pleasure movie series that somehow remains relevant and fun. Look for 4.

MOVIE REVIEW - Let's Be Cops
Goodness! Here comes a "comedy" that pushes about every button that really shouldn't be pushed and it's called, Let's Be Cops.
If you've seen the previews for this movie, you've seen pretty much the entire movie that may give you a laugh or two. If you think that this is going to be raunchier than the trailer, it is, but not much. But in addition to not being really original or funny, it pushes the envelope of decent taste by taking police work lightly. The Police Academy movies 30 years ago dealt with this for a while, but I think we feel differently about our first responders now than we did then.
This is about two buddies in Los Angeles who are roommates and on the wrong track in life. They are going nowhere, and need something to put them on a more mature path in life. So they decide to go to a costume party dressed as cops. They find out that people think they are actual cops, and decide to impersonate cops. They even buy a police car off E-bay, and go on patrol.
There motive at first is to smoke weed on busts, and go to sorority houses to look at sisters. They are living a high life, until the somehow find themselves in the middle of a gang-and corrupt cops arms running scheme. Now they are involved and the danger is real. Will they get caught? And will they survive?
In addition to not really being funny or original, this just flat out looks dated. This is clearly intended for 20 year old's with its 90's sound track and its younger "stars." This is loaded with recreational drug usage and enough profanity to go around. And it also looks like 100 other movies that have come before it, and the next 100 that will come later. This is forgettable, and simply snoozable. I love a good comedy, and even a raunchy one that's done well, but I had a hard time staying awake here, especially at the start.
Let's Be Cops. Save your money.

MOVIE REVIEW - The 100 Foot Journey
The summer movie season is in full swing, with plenty of animation and action. And a nice little movie that will get lost in it all, is The 100 Foot Journey.
This is a little independent movie starring the wonderful Helen Mirren and a very nice supporting cast that takes us on a journey we have not been on before. Anytime we see a truly original story it always gets high marks with me. This is a nice movie, that overall lacks the real fun charm of many independent movies, but in the end, is pretty darn good and nice distraction at the theaters right now.
This is the story of an Indian family who chooses to leave India due to political unrest. They are in the restaurant business and want to open an Indian cuisine eatery in the middle of rural France. But they have a few problems. First, they are somewhat low on money, and there may not be any real market for true Indian food there. They also choose to buy an old restaurant right across the cobblestone road from an amazing established French restaurant that is run by Madame Mallory (Mirren). She is a judgmental perfectionist with a sizable pole in a certain area, who is consumed with the success of her place. It is her whole life. She wants no part of the new Indian place, or it's family running it.
Our story centers though around the young Indian Chef, Hassan, (Manish Dayal) who could possibly be the best chef in all of Europe if he can just get a break. Will be be discovered? And will these two opposing restaurants be able to exist in harmony? And what can both sides learn from each other that has nothing to do with the food business at all?
This is really very well done, with a real nice mix of subtle comedy, and a very nice dose of old school romantic comedy tossed in. This introduces us to a slew of very likable characters that are fresh and bright. Also, except for Mirren, there are a whole bunch of fresh acting faces here that gives this a nice feel of real. Especially in the case of Charlotte Le Bon, who plays an insanely likable love interest of Hassan. She is wonderfully flawed and incredibly real and authentic. She is pivotal to making this really nice.
This movie is a bit too long, and there are a few draggy points where it suddenly looses its charm. Being honest, I was nervous that halfway through they were going to blow this, but it rebounds and ends up being the movie that it should. This is made by the same producers that gave us the wonderful Chocolat a few years ago, and this does have the same feel. A comedy of sorts, with still a some backbone and soul.
The 100 Foot Journey. This will get lost in the summer shuffle, but this is pretty darn good, and fresh.

Mallard Creek is a very nice 36 hole facility that is easy to get to, and more than likely gets more play overall than maybe any golf course in the area. There are two separate nine's here, today we played the original, or "Ye Old Course" as we call it. The original 18 here is wrapped around with the newer 18, and the two are very different. Ye Old Course is tree lined on almost every hole, with dog legs and strategic water. Ye New Course has a whole bunch more water, and overall is a more challenging course from start to finish, especially the front 9.
Ye Old Course is straight forward and right in front of you. From average tees its about 6,400 yards, and can play deep at about 6,600. There are some very tough par 4's especially, that can mess up your round. But there are holes to get strokes back on if you can survive. This is a course that if you play it a couple of times, you can learn and figure out some of the nuances and score on. It's generally a generous driving course, with a stronger emphasis on second short prowess. The greens are not hugely fast, but always in good shape, and many are quite large and you can possibly have amazingly long putts.
Joe Red again had a great week. First off, he played a clean amateur round, by not recording anything worse than a bogey. And that's the first step to scoring well. No penalties, and only one 6. A birdie on 3, and really strong play gave him a very nice 38/42 for a strong 80 today. Red is finding his game, and is striking the ball very well.
Tex had a tough stretch on the front with 3 doubles in a row. Not hard to do as 2 of those holes are very tough par 4's. Then an explosion on 12, an uphill par 5, that really hurt. But other than that, a nice round that kept him around for most of the morning, and he planted a 45/49 for 94 on the day. The bad number on 12 was the difference.
Beef battled all day long.We have all had one of those rounds where nothing really comes easy, but you hang in there and somehow keep he number livable. And just as it seemed the round would get away from him, a nice 5 hole par streak on the back, and tossed in a nice birdie too, settled things down for a 44/40, 84 on the day. And the only strokes over par on the back were doubles on both par 5's. A sin - but a very nice recovery.
I played very consistent today. 11 pars really helped, but no birdies. Although I did not really drive the ball very well, I too survived and had good iron play, and played as smart as I could. I had 3 doubles, (all uncalled for) that hurt, but at the end of the day, it all added up to 41/41, for 82. Not bad since I didn't drive the ball well half the round. I was happy too with the consistency.
Course highlights? Number 2, long doggy left, 430 yards, tree lined both sides, and tight. #4, 400 yard par 4, uphill and tree lined all the way. #9, short par 5, with two water hazards, and a 10,000 square foot green, #1 handicap. #10, 400 yard par 4, doggy right, tree lined all the way, very tough. #12, uphill par 5, tree lined, and 3 good shots required. #17, 375 yard par 4, doggy right, tree lined, tough driving.
Mallard Creek is a very fun course to play, that can be played to accommodate many skill levels. This course gets a ton of play, and taking that into account, is always in pretty good shape. A nice clubhouse, driving range, and putting greens, gets you ready to go. Also, this is a large place and wonderful pavilion areas and this place hosts a ton of outings.
Mallard Creek, is a staple on our tour, and we will return to play, and review Ye New Course later this summer. Should be mentioned, this course is managed very well. As much play as it gets, they keep things moving well, and understand the game and the level of play that plays there.
Next week The Dewsweepers return to Huron to tee it up at another great 36 hole place, Thunderbird Hills. This time we will play the North Course as we reviewed The South a month or so ago.
Here are some other courses we have played and reviewed recently.

MOVIE REVIEW - Into The Storm
Summer time means big budget action thrillers. Sometimes with no real reason for being made, and that brings us to Into The Storm.
ITS is the story of some really nice people who live in tornado alley who are trying to survive a horrific weather day in the middle of tornado season. It also focuses on a small team of storm chasers who are risking life and limb to try to document as close as they can, the most dangerous storms they can find. These two groups will somehow come together and create some high drama, and try to survive as one, on this terrible day.
That's about as deep as our story really goes. What this really is, is a special effects fest that are quite good at times, and really silly at others. Out characters are thin, predictable, and are they same ones you see in most movies like this. There are certainly no Oscar winning performances here, but we get through it. The star of this movie is, the special effects, as they do the best they can to take you deep inside a huge thunderstorm.
But, try as they might this cannot really be taken seriously as there is just too much silliness. Our characters make one horrible decision after another, always seemingly making matters worse. The storm somehow becomes the "worst that has ever been", because a young meteorologist says so. And in rural seemingly Oklahoma in a dinky farm town, and entire fleet of 747's is lifted off the ground from the airport as the tornado hits. What an entire fleet, and and airport full of 747's is doing in small town USA is beyond comprehension. Hello??
And being honest, there are a few more problems like this where the emphasis is placed squarely on the ability to make a movie based on what you CAN do, as opposed to what you SHOULD do. Much of this does not add up, and is simply an excuse to make a big special effects movie and not a really solid movie. To it's credit, is is very tidy at about 90 minutes, and that's about all you can take. You can only watch the wind blow hard for so long, then you're ready to do something else.
Into The Storm. Interesting for a while? Yes. In the end, just average at the very best.

This week we teed it up at one of the staples of the Dewsweper Tour, Valleaire in northern Medina County in Hinckley. Yes, a tornado went through this course a few weeks back, but they are no worse for the wear, and are ready for you. Valleaire is a modest facility that is run on Sunday mornings by a wonderful woman named, Cindy who always treats us very well, and makes us feel welcome. This morning was no exception.
Valleaire is a course of moderate length, with a fair amount of sand, and some, but not a lot of water but is challenging for anyone. There are tons of tree lined fairways to sloped greens that make this a course where straight is best overall. This is also a course that gives you some short 4's and 5's to score on as well. But, you need to take advantage of those, because when the going gets tough here, this can be very difficult. So scoring where you should is a must.
This is a course that has gone through a few positive changes over the past couple of years. First, the 9's have been flipped, 1 is now 10 and 10 was 1. Speeds play up. Also, what is now number 18, a wonderful pat is being rebuilt with a new elevated tee box that should be done soon. But the tee you'll hit on now, is very tough, to a green over the water. And the tornado that went through here, has done some damage, but the course is ready for you.
This was the round of Joe Red. Red hit the ball well all day long, and played a very consistent round. A great mix of nice drives, well though our approach shots, and decent putting. Overall very solid 18 holes as he finally put is all together for a very nice 81.
Tex drove the ball well, but had some second shot problems and that prevented him from playing as well as he could have. But he battled all day long, and kept the number humble, as this is not an easy gold course, for a 99 on the day.
Beef played an incredible first 10 holes, with 4 birdies on the first 10. Then a struggle on the last 8, gave him a nice 83 on the day. But his blistering 38 on the front had him in a positing to score better. But man, was he hitting the ball well.
I never got on a roll this week. I played just bad enough not to score well. I didn't do anything really bad, just nothing really good, for an 89 on the day. with 13 bogeys. At least I was consistent. Not bad number, just not very many good ones.
Course Highlights? Number 1, 435 yard par 4, to a raised and sloped green. Number 9, long and tough par 4, creek at the landing area to a raised green. Number 10, driveable par 4, 275 yard uphill. Number 11, long and tough par 4, 430 yards to a hard to hit green. Number 12, a long and tough par 5, 535 yards. Plays very long.
Valleaire is a good place to play, but hit it straight. Trees and rough can make a tough round. Greens are good, and all is really fun at Valleaire.
Scores
Joe Red - 81
Beef - 83
Wynn - 89
Tex -- 99
Next week we tee is up at Mallard Creek in Columbia Station, a nice 36 hole track.

MOVIE REVIEW - A Most Wanted Man
Strange time of the year for a real thinking mans movie, but the new A Most Wanted Man is out this week and is quite good. Trouble is, not may will see this because of the season.
This was the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman's final starring role that he finished. And even though he's a multiple Oscar nominee, and an Oscar winner, he has never been better than this. He owns this movie. This is a modern suspenseful drama that deals with the threat of terrorism and the people of The West that are battling it every day.
This takes place in Germany modern day. Hoffman plays the leader of an elite, and off the record anti-terrorism force that not even the highest members of the German government know about. They are based in Hamburg where the attacks on 9-11 were born. Hamburg remains a place where terrorist like to start because of its freedom, its ports, and they use it as a gateway to the west. The task forces job is to stop these guys before they get started.
This movie showcases the never ending difficulty that job entails. The terrorists have vast networks of people around the globe, and have become very sophisticated. They use they existing laws of free countries to their advantage. They also use deception, skulduggery, the banking system, and even the good nature of good, but immensely naive activists in these free countries to attempt to gain the upper hand. Hoffman's force has to find the correct balance of how to handle these terrorists. Arrest or kill them? Or use them to take down the next guy, or guys in line. But who can be trusted?
This movie is an interesting mix of some very fine actors. Willem Dafoe, Rachel MacAdams, Robin Wright Penn and many very good supporting actors. But one thing is for certain. They all are completely paled to Hoffman's amazing performance. I'll say it. In this movie, they all look like rookies next to him. He's that good.
Hoffman's character is a chain smoking, heavy drinking, deeply committed and troubled man, totally devoted to his job. He brings a huge authenticity to this complicated role, and is so immersed in it, you forget it's actually him acting. As many great movies as Hoffman made, this is his single best performance. And sadly it will be his last. Yes, he will have some time in the next Hunger Games, but he did not finish that project before his death. He is sensational here.
This is movie is not for everyone. This is a slow burn movie, with little or no action, special effects or bells and whistles. This is extremely well written, directed and edited. This will more than likely do far better on streaming and DVD in a few months was many people would like to see this, but maybe not the time of year to go to a big drama.
A Most Wanted Man. Hoffman is terrific. Sad he is gone. Well done.

DVD - New on Streaming and DVD August 5
This is a big week for new releases for your home viewing. And again there is something for everyone. After a few slow weeks, here we are picking up the pace somewhat.
Keep in mind, we only feature major motion pictures here, and not straight to DVD, or TV shows making their way here. Where applicable I will like you back to my original review from the theater run, to help you make an informed decision before you rent, buy, or pay-per-view.
New This Week!
Divergent -
This was not the major hit I think makers saw when they were putting this together, but still a hit. This to me is too close to The Hunger Games in almost every way. And not as good.
Need For Speed -
If you like watching guys drive cars around for 90 minutes at a high rate of speed, then this is for you. Should be noted, this is not Fast And Furious, in any way. Don't be confused.
Oculus -
Who knew a haunted mirror could be such a problem? This is not for everyone, fairly intense.
Gods Not Dead-
This movie, a small indy flick certainly has an agenda and a message it wants to convey, but this did find an audience. Safe for everyone

MOVIE REVIEW - Guardians Of The Galaxy
There are entirely too many comic book and superhero movies made these days from my seat. But Marvel's GOTG was totally worth making.
This cleaned up big time at the box office its opening weekend, and it was well deserved. This is a break from the usual comic book movie in many regards and is a fun afternoon at the movies. The biggest thing is, this doesn't take itself too seriously, and that lets us all breathe. And know that were here to have fun, and not save mankind from brutal extinction in the modern day.
This overall story is simply too complicated to explain effectively here, but this is it in a nutshell. This group of misfits, both human and non-human are wandering all over the universe. They all come from different backgrounds and somehow are thrown together to form an unlikely alliance to save the Galaxy and numerous lives. There is this thing called the "infinity stone" that could mean the destruction of millions of lives if in the wrong hands. Their job is to make sure that it goes into the right hands.
This is just flat out fun. It's funny at times, and heartfelt at times too. Yes, about 90 percent of this is computer generated and yes there are log science-fiction battle scenes that go on a bit too long, but none of that is a deal breaker. This is a good ride, and the audience loved this today. I think this has the right idea. Comic books, and superhero movies shouldn't be like going to the dentist. It's tough to go to see one where they are making tons of social commentary and showcasing terrorism in today's world. Most of them, we are all facing the end of times if our hero doesn't come up big. The formula is old, tired, and not really fun movie going.
This will be a bit too long, a bit too loud for some, and too silly for others. But I found this refreshing in that, it's a new approach to this kind of movie. This is not going to win the Oscar for Best Picture, but this is good summer time movie making.
