MOVIE REVIEW - The Big Wedding

This movie is so insanely horrible, I can't wait to write this review simply because the people in this movie should have known better.  In fact,. they do know better, but it's a paycheck.

Let's name names. The Big Wedding stars Robert DeNiro, Catherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams, Amada Seyfried, Topher Grace and bunch of other money hungry actors who decided that this was worthwhile to do.  Not one of the for mentioned is anywhere near good in this hunk of trash that was dead on the table as a ridiculous script to begin with.

This is another wacky weekend movie with amazingly rich people who are one big dysfunctional family, that have a crazy wedding weekend.  That's about all the story that is worth mentioning.  Everyone is sleeping with everyone, or trying to, and there is serious dysfunction between virtually all characters.  Some of the plot lines in this are so ludicrous, so dumb, so incredibly self-indulgent that this is actually hard to watch at times.   I could not wait for this to be over.

Certainly all who were making this movie knew the whole time this was one giant up-chuck.  There was NO laughter in the theater outside of a couple of giggles here and there.  Watching many of these seasoned actors like DeNiro, Sarandon, and Keaton utter the immensely insulting and 7th grade dialogue was borderline painful.   The biggest laugh comes when Heigl throws up on DeNiro at the dinner table with a batch of projectile puke, which is also metaphoric for this entire movie.

This suffers from bad writing, a bad and tired idea, and junior high level acting.   I still have no idea who this is really made for either.   Certainly younger patrons have no real idea who the main actors are by and large.  And an older crowd like seniors may not find this in the best of taste most of the time.   These actors, the good ones and the bad, have no chance with this script.  And you will also learn and confirm that many of the young  "stars" in this, really have no talent and can do nothing with nothing.  And shame on the veterans for making this and embarrassing themselves. Have some dignity.

This is just bad.  I'm calling it right now, on my year end list of the worst movies of the year, I can't see this not being on it.   This though will find some sort of audience and there will be many who do like it because of the formula, and the "star power."  But it won't be a big enough share for this to be a hit.   With this costing a boatload to make in salaries, it brings in a measly 7 million first weekend out.   What a disaster.

The Big Wedding.  Every frame of this is worse than the last.

LOCAL GOLF - Sunday Morning Golf Course Review

This week The Dewsweepers played our first round ever at Fox Den Golf course in Stow.  It will not be our last, as this is a very nice place to play.

Fox Den is roughly a 6,400 yard par 72 golf course that makes you play all the clubs in your bag.  A great mix of short and longer par 4's and short but tough par 5's.   For early in the year they were in great shape with very lush fairways, and great greens that are still healing from a well done and professional aeration.  But you can see come mid May, as he tree's bud, and all grows in, this place is going to be pristine.  Should be noted too that we played in great conditions on the front, but in a steady drizzle on the back, but we made it through.

As the weather is now warming up we are all finding our early season and early morning swings, and we all played far better today than in previous weeks.   Beef was back this week, and played very consistently on the front, even tossing in a birdie on number 7, a nice par 5, as he checked in with a 41 on the front.  He maintained a nice stroke on the back as the weather went south, continuing to hit the driver well, staying out of trouble and not letting things get away, for a 44 on the back for 85 on the day.  Not a bad round especially after things got wet, including hands and clubs.

Joe Red hit the ball well all day log by and large, but the putter was letting him down and would be the bugaboo of his round.   Although he decided to just chip one off the fairway from 30 yards on number 3, then do a peacock dance we all wished we wouldn't have seen, but that's the way it goes.  After a nice 43 on the front, it all caught up with him on the back.  Red had a tough stretch of 5 6's in a row that cost him his score.  And the putter was mostly to blame, as many of his putts died at the hole.  There was a bunch of break at the hole all morning long.  He actually played better than his 94 would suggest, as he is still adjusting to his new driver.

Tex hung in there on the front posting bogey golf 45.  But we all thought the back was a tougher design than the front to begin with, and toss in the rain and wet it played bar tougher.   Tex threw in a few 7's on the back that never helps.  Tex putted well all day long again draining 7 putts of the day that kept him in it.  Overall Tex hit the ball better that he has so far this year, so better scores are just ahead.

I was very happy with my game for 17 of the 18 holes.   I hit the ball very well, and was putting same.   But as I was sailing along through the first 14 holes I was was scoring well  - I was only 5 over.  Then I threw up on my shoes (in a golf sense,) and posted a 9 on number 15 par 5!  I can't think of the last 9 I have had.  That really derailed my round. 5 over after 14, 4 over on one hole!  But I hung in there posting a 40 on the front, and a 44 on the back.  Not bad with a 9 on the card.  I was in position to go low, but it's tough to recover from that terrible 9.  But 9 pars no birdies and no double bogies!

Course highlights?  Well, the course itself.  This is an extremely well designed golf course that has a nice mix of tree lined fairways, some sand, some water, all carved into a nice rolling terrain.  Plenty of up and down, with not a lot of flat lies.  Greens that to me, were somewhat small, but very nice.  It's a course that is driver friendly overall, but it's not so long that you can't hit some irons off the tee if that is your strength.  This is a quiet, serene setting that is really nice too.  No houses on the course, and you feel very much immersed in the course, especially after he first 4 holes or so.

Worth any trip to play.  Fox Den is a great golf course.  Play it.

MOVIE REVIEW - Pain And Gain

Every now and again a true story comes along at the movies that is so bizarre, there leaves little doubt it has to be true. No one could write this story.  I haven't seen a true story this strange since the masterpiece, Fargo nearly 20 years ago.

That is this weeks Pain And Gain with Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and a real nice supporting cast.  This is the story of Daniel Lugo and his completely inept "posse," that somehow ripped off a hugely rich man of literally all of his money and possessions in Miami during the mid-1990's. The circumstances surrounding this whole ordeal is nothing short of head-shaking.

Lugo  (Wahlberg) and his band of hacks are loser body builders in Miami in 1994.  Lugo is frustrated with life and decides through a fellow hack of an inspirational speaker that he should have a bigger financial piece of the pie in life than he has.  So as a personal trainer, he befriends a client Victor (Tony Shalhoub).   Lugo then enlists the help of fellow body builders Paul (Johnson) and Adrian (Anthony Mackie) to hatch a birdbrained plot kidnap Victor and have him sign over everything he owns to them.  And despite the fact they are amazingly horrible at this, they are somehow successful.

Then after Victor survives numerous attempts at being killed by this idiotic gang, he calls and somehow gets a retired Miami detective Ed (Ed Harris) to try to track them down. But only after the Miami police department doesn't believe any of Victors story, and blow him off.  As Ed goes after the gang, they decide to try the same thing on the king of phone porn Frank (Micheal Rispoli).  Only this time they are not anywhere near successful.  Will they get caught?  That is Pain And Gain.

This is a wildly compelling movie with a story you certainly have not seen before.  There is great character development and really slick interaction with our stars.   This movie twists and turns throughout and each one is more bizarre than the last.  But skillfully, this movie never loses its central focus of being ironic, off beat, and completely original.   All of our stars give really solid performances, especially Johnson who is wonderfully cast was this mountain of man ex-con, with a substance abuse history, a very soft side and a guilty conscience. He is very funny and overall terrific.  Great to see Ed Harris back on screen as he is one of Hollywood's best supporting actors. He gives a real nice performance in a small, but important role.

Also good to see a Wahlberg dominated movie that looks nothing like the previous 3 or 4.  They were all starting to bunch together, but this certainly stands apart.  This is funny, charming at times, rough, harsh, edgy, ironic, strange and fun all at the same time.   This gets huge originality points, and is a very nice alternative to what's at the movies right now.  This is a hard R rated movie and well deserved.

Pain And Gain.  A very entertaining movie.

LOCAL GOLF - Sunday Morning Golf Review

This week The Dewsweeper's Tour kicked off the 2013 season playing a course we did not review last year, Copper Top At Cherokee Hills in Brunswick.   If you haven't been out there in a while, you should put it on your list of "must play" local plays.

I remember a long time ago when this was simply known as Cherokee Hills, right out there on Route 303, just west of the 42/303 junction.  And being honest, it was not very nice. But over the past few years this par 70 course has come a long way in every single regard.  Not only is this great golf, it's a great facility for food, drink and fun.  Most importantly the course has been upgraded immensely and redesigned in some areas and is better than ever.

Even for early in this young season, this course is in great shape.  We had a 7AM tee time, that had to be backed off till 830 because of frost, but after the sun came out, the fairways are in great shape and the greens rolled wonderfully.  At this point it is still cart path only, and that has protected this course greatly in this early season when the growing season has not been very good.

Beef has the week off as he was out of town on business this week, so Joe Red's so Bryan filled in.  It was cold at the beginning and none of us really played the front 9 well, Bryan included.  He was treading water till a bad snowman 8 on the par 4 number 6, 2 handicap, and that hurt as he settled for a 49 on the front. Sad, because he is a far better player than that. Then the sun came out and so did Bryan's game as he tossed down a very nice 42 on the back and could have been much better except the putter let him down on the back, could have been easily a 39.

Joe Red never really took off for his round, but was playing consistent golf will he took took a bad number on the par 5 number 9.  Joe Red is also going through an equipment change with a new driver that is going to be a real asset when he dials it in.  That is always a learning curve, and now it is causing him some difficulty off the tee.  But Joe Red usually is a good driver, and it will come, as he went 45/45 for a 90.  New driver and cold temps, scores are not going to be great yet for anyone. But when he gets that squared away, he will be in good shape.

Tex is a player that relies on roll off the tee as he hits a low ball, and normally has a strong pitch and run game around the green.  But at this time of the year, wet fairways give no roll off the tee, and pitch and run is tough right now.  Tex hung in there on the front, putting well, but it caught up to him on the back.  But for Tex's game the back is going to play tougher as it is more hilly and with more terrain.  Especially number 10, 11, a5 and 18.

I got off to a horrible start going 8 over in the first 5 holes, including a double after a perfect drive on 1 a short par 4, and a triple on 2 another short par 4.   Then I got it going including back-to-back birdies on 8 and 9.  Good thing, gave me a 42 on the front. On the back, I shot the same but was more steady with no bad numbers and a few pars shooting 84, after a abysmal start, I'll take it.

Course highlights?  Number 3, terrific par 3, played about 175 all over water to a sloped green.  Number 5, long par 4 over a gorge, to an elevated and small green.   Number 9, great par 5, 3 to get there. 10 is a long par 4 to a perched green with no room to miss it.  11, great par 3 all uphill about 150, no room to miss.  15 is a great par 5 small green up then down, wonderful hole. And 16, a short and drivable par 4, if you can carry water at about 240.   There are only 2 par 5's on this course and you better use your head when playing them.  They are not overly long, but real shot makers holes.

This is a wonderful course that makes you make decisions and use all the clubs in your bag.  It is a new day at this course, and is well worth any drive to play it. GPS on electric carts also a very nice touch.  Overall this is a generous driving course, but second shots are the key. If you have a decent to good short game, you will have a leg up at Copper Top.

Scores

Wynn  -  84
Joe Red  -  90
Bryan  -  91
Tex  - 103

MOVIE REVIEW - Oblivion

Tom Cruise is back this week with the new graphic novel come to life, the sci-fi budget buster, Oblivion.

First off,  if you are not seriously into Sci-Fi movies, then just keep on going.   This is deep sci-fi in every single frame. This has no shortage of gigantic special effects that the director was obviously in love with.  They dominate this movie from start to finish.  This is big, loud, and has some moments that are somewhat interesting.

It's another "end of the world" movie, which is a prevailing and favorite theme of Hollywood right now.   It is the year 2077, and it's been 60 years since Earth was attacked by an alien life form.  The attack was to destroy the moon, and let nature do the rest.  Tsunami's, earthquakes, floods and drought ensued.  Also during the war with the aliens, humans decided not to go without a fight, and launches all of it's nuclear weapons, and Earth is now not inhabitable.  The survivors now live on a space structure called "The Tet."

Jack (Cruise) and his lover and partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) live on an outpost on earth and are the "mop up" crew.   They are there to maintain the machines on earth that help maintain The Tet in the sky.  As they near the end of their mission on earth, Jack who is a curious sort, makes actual contact with humans still on earth, and seems to learn a different version of what The Tet is and who is actually in charge of them, and of earth.  That's as far as I'll go, in case you go.

This is actually the mixture of many other sci-fi movies, especially from the 1970's.  Now that is a pretty interesting idea, but the problem is outside of the amazing special effects, the story borrowing really cuts down on its own originality, of which there is none.  Seems this was an idea to make technically up to date sci-fi flick with a big star.   Luckily, this is not overly long and does not wear out it's welcome, when you sense that it easily could have.

Cruise has reinvented himself yet again as a science fiction star.   He has seemed to finally get over all of his overacting, and now just looks like everyone else in the movies.  His presence here, be it plain, is the only reason this movie exists.  Riseborough is a wonderfully, and perfectly flawed beauty that fills up the screen with Cruise and gives this a nice, fresh look.  She really is the only one doing some acting in this movie, showing great versatility from straight to sexy, and this flick is better when she is in it.  Morgan Freeman has a small, but central role that gives this some credence as well.

But as you add all of this up, it comes woefully close to being a blatant rip off of many other and better movies.  And for me, I always give high marks to stories I have not seem before, and each story line that runs through this, has been done, and done to death.    Terrific special effects and a very loud soundtrack can not save this. Or any movie.

Oblivion.  Soon to be lost to same.

MOVIE REVIEW - The Place Beyond The Pines

In limited release it is the new Indy flick, The Place Beyond The Pines.

This has been highly critically acclaimed.  And when you go you will know right up front this is an off the beaten path independent movie from the very first frame.  This is a movie goers movie.  If you go to one or two movies a year, this is more than likely not your movie. This was made by the same producers of Blue Valentine from 2011, which was another very heralded Indy flick.

This stars Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes.  This is a very complicated police drama that takes tons of twists and turns.   In a nutshell, this is the story of Luke (Gosling) and Ro (Mendes).  Luke is a total loser who is a motorcycle stunt rider in a traveling carny.  He has a tryst with Ro and unknown to him, after the carny moves on Ro has a baby and he is the father.   A year later he returns and learns of the baby boy.   He decides that he will try to do right by his new son.  But being unskilled, he turns to robbing banks and escaping on his motorcycle.

As one job goes wrong, he is cornered in a standoff.  He is then shot and killed by a local cop Avery (Cooper).  Avery is also shot in the standoff, and is hailed a hero as he recovers.  Then enter police corruption from the local police department and Avery is now caught up in a huge scandal as his naivete is doing him in.  Then, he uses the powerful pull of his politically connected father to turn the events around to his advantage and he actually becomes a local District Attorney.

Flash forward 15 years, and Avery is now running for State Attorney General.  His son is now 17 years old and as happenstance would take over his son and Luke's son end up being friends. Both are on a horrible path, and are having major brushes with the law.  Now the question is, will the kids be able to figure out who each other is, and what will happen when, and if they do?

This is deep, heavy drama that really takes on many different groups leaving virtually no one unscathed.  This also makes huge social commentary about police, politics, families of all kinds and the teen world that many parents are convinced doesn't exist.  But it does.  This is a powerful movie making that really steps on your chest and doesn't let up for 2 and half hours.  This has a hint of sadness, and melancholy to it that will not make it enjoyable for many, but very riveting for others.

Cooper, Gosling and Mendes are all very good in these large roles, and they are backed up by a well suited supporting cast.  This also has all the ingredients that a Indy movie would have.  It has a different flow, and look to it.  This is exceedingly well acted, directed and edited.  This may one of the very good movies of this year, that not many people will ever see.

The Place Beyond The Pines.  Very well done.

MOVIE REVIEW - Scary Movie 5

You know the larger the number that follows the actual title of a movie, generally means the worse the movie.  That fits here.

Scary Movie 5 is out this week, and more of the same old thing.  In this installment, SM5 decides to lampoon some more movies and weave it into their single story.   Here it's the Paranormal series, Mama, Evil Dead, Black Swan and there are others too.   They even go back and dig up a few has-been and aging stars to make cameo appearances here, and little of this really works.  This is like hearing the same joke over and over again.

Oh, don't get me totally wrong, there are a few funny lines, and a couple of ridiculous laugh out loud moments in this movie, but not enough.  Not near enough.  I mean I burst out a time or two, and I'm not ashamed.  But I also was repulsed a time or two, and I actually felt like booing at a few of the decisions made here.

The opening sequence with Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan playing themselves was pretty funny.  The effective use of parody and self deprecating humor worked.  In the scene they are attempting to make a sex tape (that never get made of course) and it all goes horribly wrong as they lampoon Paranormal Activity.  A chuckle or two.

A scene with Snoop Dog was very funny, as he makes fun of himself and his lifestyle as they introduce their Mama sequence.  Regardless of what his music says or does, I have enjoyed Snoop much more on TV in documentaries and comedy's far more.  There is something about him that makes me laugh at times.

But much of this is stupid, silly and overall just tasteless.  I little bit of this goes a long way.   Far more hype than actual fun.  Even the lovely Ashley Tisdale can't save this as she is the overall star.  Also be mindful, many of the things in the preview are not in the actual movie.  So you won't be surprised.

Scary Movie 5.  Let's hope this is it.

MOVIE REVIEW - Trance

In somewhat limited release this week, it's the new mind-bending thriller, Trance.

Trance is one of the most complicated movies to come around in a good long time.  This is deep, heavy, and open to interpretation movie making.  And being fair, this is not for everyone. Simply because very casual movie goers may not want to work this hard at the movies.  And this is a bit of work.

In a very basic nutshell this is Trance.   There is a heist at a London Art Auction house that turns out to be an inside job.  The five guys involved in this heist go to great lengths to make sure all the bases are covered and the plan seems to be fool proof.  But how can anyone foresee that one of the pivotal members of the team would be injured during the crime, and have a head injury leading to amnesia.  Now he can't remember where the 26 million dollar stolen painting is hidden.  This is a problem.

So the others employ a female hypnotherapist to try to find out where in his mind this painting is.  But the twist is, now that she knows the gravity of the situation, is she attempting to extract information from him, or is she trying to plant info within him during these sessions to try to horn in on the bounty that may be uncovered?  Great idea for a movie?  You bet.

Of course there is far more than just that. But this is immensely complicated and there is no way possible to try to communicate it through this or any other written review.   If the premise is interesting to you, and you like deep thinking movies, this is your day!

This movie has a lot of twists and turns, and really makes you wonder as to what is actually going on. There are numerous flashbacks, and foreshadowing scenes that are skillfully woven in to current action, as we go deep inside all of the minds of all of our 6 main characters.   Overall very good, except a couple of dead spots do slow it down, and being honest come dangerously close to making me lose interest.  Which of course you can not do.  Nor can you go to the bathroom during this movie simply because it all changes and happens too fast.

Trance. A solid and deserved R rating.  Good but not great movie.

MOVIE REVIEW - 42

We are certainly due for that really nice movie comes out and seems to usher in some of the really good movies that will be on the way.   This year that movie is 42.

42 is the true story of the breaking of the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1947 with the emergence of Jackie Robinson who was the player, and Branch Rickey who made it happen.  42 takes place between 1945, when Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers boss decided he was going to integrate baseball, and 1947 when Robinson took the field.  Changing baseball, and everything else forever in American culture racially.

To it's credit, this is far more than just Robinson's journey, it is the story of two men.  Very different in about every way, except for their love of baseball.  Robinson, a star athlete in college at UCLA, then a standout player in the old Negro Leagues in baseball.  Rickey, an older man, with the love of the game and it's future.  42 makes no bones about it that part of Rickey's motivation was money in integrating the Dodgers, but there is much more to the story.  And that is the strength of this movie. Why would Rickey take this enormous gamble?

As great as it is to see the Robinson saga play out skillfully on screen here, it is really great to see Rickey's story finally told.  Be it only a very small slice of who he really was as a man and his countless and amazing contributions to professional baseball.  He is not overly well known, but he is a baseball immortal, to be spoken in the same breath as Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson, Mack and Johnson.   Much of what we enjoy in MLB today can we take for granted, but Rickey was responsible for it.  But the Robinson achievement is his crowning jewel.

Ricky and Robinson were both extraordinary men.  This is chronicled very well here. Rickey knowing that not only did you have to have the right player, but the right guy.  And Robinson was the right guy. Overcoming amazingly powerful bigotry and prejudice was tough stuff in the country in the 1940's.

Chadwick Boseman is Robinson and is very well cast as his likeness to Jackie is amazing. And he looks very comfortable in the baseball scenes here, and there are many.  He gives a very nice performance bringing Robinson to life.   But to me, Harrison Ford as Rickey is nothing short of terrific.

I think this is his best career performance to date.   Before you climb all over me about the Indiana Jones flicks, they are two very different things.  Jones was brought to life in the movies as an action hero, with all the bells and toys.  And he is great in those flicks.  This is a very different thing.  Ford brings Rickey to life as an accomplished actor, doing real acting.  Becoming him, with only his craft in hand.  Ford is blessed with a well written script and is also blessed playing character that is amazingly complex, and interesting, and one that  most don't know. He is sensational

42. Very good movie, great script, and a story that should be told and told well.  Ford = terrific.

MOVIE REVIEW - Evil Dead

This week a remake of the 1981 movie from then young film maker Sam Raimi, Evil Dead is new in theaters.  There's been much hype of this new movie, and big promises have been made on this being a very scary movie.

Sadly, it is not.  As compelling as the first few minutes of this movie are, the sad reality is it continually sells itself out as it charges on to gore, blood, and cheap violence.  Always makes me wonder how so many movie makers don't actually know what is really scary.   Blood, extreme and graphic violence does sell tickets, but in the end, is not scary.   But, begin fair, just as what we think as a society is funny is always evolving, so it what we think is scary.

In this installment, a group of five 20 somethings go off into the woods to a deserted cabin.  One of them is vowing to give up drugs, Mia.   This is an intervention of sorts, and they vow to ride out the withdrawal with Mia in this remote cabin.  This is not their first attempt for them to get her off drugs.  What they discover is that this cabin was the site of a ritual sacrificial killing years earlier.   They discover this book that was the heart of this episode, and dare to open it and read it.  After exploring this book, they unintentionally release some sort of devil, or demon spirit that takes up residence inside of Mia.

She becomes possessed.  and starts a rein of terror, and needs to claim five souls according to the book.  The demon then travels from person to person, as they begin to pick off each other one by one. There are a  couple of small side plots, but that's done just to try to give this some semblance of plot. What this movie is, is violence squared.  If you love gore, this is your movie.

It is not too much to say that this could possibly be the most violent movie you can see at the theaters. There is plenty of blood, and extreme and graphic torture.   If you've ever wondered what is would be like to shoot a nail gun into someones head and face, or jam a running chainsaw in someones mouth than you should rush to see this.  And being honest, that's just scratching the surface.   There is also plenty of cutting your own arm off, not once but twice.

But they should be commended though for this though.  The producers did promise non stop action, and a roller coaster type ride, and that is exactly what you get.  They waste little time getting you into the action and keep you there.  But truth be told, it's not really scary.   It is disturbing and difficult to watch at times, so if that's your definition of  "scary" than you will be terrified.   Bu, in the end, I think this is just disturbing.  Not in a societal way, but more in a let's see how far we can go, before people actually turn away for a few seconds.

Evil Dead.  Scary? No.  Disturbing? Yes.  You must embrace graphic, and extreme violence to embrace this.  Not for everyone.  Leave Nana at home.

MOVIE REVIEW - The Host

From the pen of Stephenie Meyer comes the adaptation of her novel, now a movie, The Host.  She gave us the Twilight series of book. This is more teen love stuff.

This is a tough thing to describe in tidy fashion, but here goes in a nutshell.   Earth has been invaded "body snatcher" style in the future.   This life form called "The Seekers"  now uses humans as their bodies. They use them as "hosts."  There still are some real humans that have not been found and taken over, they are called "the resistance."   These invaders have inhabited planets before, as they take over, and "perfect" the planet.  But trying to inhabit a human planet and human bodies and spirits is proving difficult.

This story is told through the life of Melanie.  She is a young woman who is finally captured, implanted with the invading life form, and now is a "seeker."  The rulers of this life form want to use her to help them locate other humans so they too can be taken as hosts.  But Melanie is strong, and there is an ongoing battle with her as she fights a continual battle in her own brain with Melanie still in there, and the new personality, called Wanderer..  You have to like to watch and listen to this young woman have ongoing verbal arguments with herself to enjoy this, as it is the bulk of what's going on here.

She finds other humans who have found refuge safely from the Seekers, and they take her in as some of them are family.  They can clearly see that she is now a seeker, but eventually they see that she is both Melanie and Wanderer. They come to accept both parts of her, even though the seeker part is clearly a threat to their very survival.  Then enter two young, and hunky teen guys who decide to fight over her affections, as each one of them, is in love with both people inside of her.  (Saw that one coming, as it is Stephenie Meyer)

This then turns into a film of acceptance.  Can we all just get along?  Can we not just inhabit this planet and all live as one?   That is the attempted final message I think, but I'm not overly sure.  You see, as where I understand the book is very interesting, the movie is slow, and belabored.  It takes a long time to get to any message, if there really is one... in the movie version.

Being brutally honest, not much at all happens in this movie.  It is written in "teen speak" as Twilight was.  It is quiet and has a sense of melancholy that runs all through it as Twilight does.   Minimal action, and seldom even a raised voice, and barely any passion at all.  There is an incredble amount of repetitive dialogue that seems to always end up in the same place as the scene before.   There are some fresh faces in this movie and that's good to see. But for many all they will be able to see and hear is a slow and mundane pace of a story that may be far more interesting to read, than to see.   My sense is that your imagination while reading can paint a far better picture of this world and story than these movie makers can.

The Host.  Long and winding.  A sharper movie maker with a sharper razor blade could have done this better, edited it tighter and had a better picture.

MOVIE REVIEW - Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor

Tyler Perry is a very successful movie maker and TV Producer.   His talent and successes are countless and so is his bank account.

That's what makes this new movie Temptation:  such a huge disappointment.  I think the story in a raw form, the idea, and the basic plot is a good one.  And in the end, tries hard, and does make a somewhat poignant point.  Yeah, it's an old twist on an old formula, but it's fine.  The problem with this movie is a bad script, dialogue and being brutally honest, some really bad acting.

This is the story of Judith and Brice. They are friends from childhood, and grow up to be married. They move from the South to Washington D.C. to begin a new life.  They are struggling financially.  Plus, they have become in short, bored with each other and have started taking each other for granted.  Judith becomes vulnerable, and at work meets Harley.  Harley is a very rich, and successful tech guy, who quickly becomes smitten with Judith.  They begin working together closely and you can see trouble coming.

They begin an affair, and Judith finds out that Harley with his money can make all of her dreams come true.  So she leaves Brice and starts a new life with Harley not fully aware of the trouble ahead for her.   How does this all play out?

This movie is brutally slow getting off the ground, and then has a tough time staying interesting.  Much of the middle of this flick are scenes with Harley trying to convince Judith to sleep with him, and that is mundane after a while.  This movie really drags its feet, and it's difficult to sense the chemistry between our characters, of which there is little.   Bad acting and writing really hurt this.  Plus I think this movie does a cardinal sin.  You really don't like or care about any of the main characters personally so it's really hard to cheer for anyone at all.

Temptation:  This may be one Tyler Perry project too many.   From a quality movie standpoint, this maybe should have stayed on the shelf.   This is a snoozer.
