MOVIE REVIEW - Trance

In somewhat limited release this week, it's the new mind-bending thriller, Trance.

Trance is one of the most complicated movies to come around in a good long time.  This is deep, heavy, and open to interpretation movie making.  And being fair, this is not for everyone. Simply because very casual movie goers may not want to work this hard at the movies.  And this is a bit of work.

In a very basic nutshell this is Trance.   There is a heist at a London Art Auction house that turns out to be an inside job.  The five guys involved in this heist go to great lengths to make sure all the bases are covered and the plan seems to be fool proof.  But how can anyone foresee that one of the pivotal members of the team would be injured during the crime, and have a head injury leading to amnesia.  Now he can't remember where the 26 million dollar stolen painting is hidden.  This is a problem.

So the others employ a female hypnotherapist to try to find out where in his mind this painting is.  But the twist is, now that she knows the gravity of the situation, is she attempting to extract information from him, or is she trying to plant info within him during these sessions to try to horn in on the bounty that may be uncovered?  Great idea for a movie?  You bet.

Of course there is far more than just that. But this is immensely complicated and there is no way possible to try to communicate it through this or any other written review.   If the premise is interesting to you, and you like deep thinking movies, this is your day!

This movie has a lot of twists and turns, and really makes you wonder as to what is actually going on. There are numerous flashbacks, and foreshadowing scenes that are skillfully woven in to current action, as we go deep inside all of the minds of all of our 6 main characters.   Overall very good, except a couple of dead spots do slow it down, and being honest come dangerously close to making me lose interest.  Which of course you can not do.  Nor can you go to the bathroom during this movie simply because it all changes and happens too fast.

Trance. A solid and deserved R rating.  Good but not great movie.
