MOVIE REVIEW - Hello, My Name Is Doris

This is a short, little movie, and so will this review be. Because this is a funny little movie you need to go see.

Sally Field stars as quirky Doris Miller of New York City.  She is a strange little woman who has lived with her mother her whole life. Doris is about 60ish, and finds herself alone after her mother dies.  She lives in Staten Island, and works in New York at a dead end job.  Buit she takes an interest in a new man who has been transferred into her office.  He is about 25 years younger.

They strike up a friendship, and somehow find common ground to build a friendship. But Doris wants more.  She thinks.  She strays way out of her comfort zone to make herself available to him in his world.  Will this EVER work out?  Is she this wonderfully fun strange little woman?  Or is she simply lonely and out of her mind?  It's close, and she's very fun to get to know.

Sally Field is simply amazing in this wonderfully written role, and gives one of the best performances of her career.  This movie has the strength to create this wonderful character, and great characters all around her, but address many of the tougher issues facing many aging people today.  This movie has a story to tell, tells it, and moves on. Every single decision in the making of this was a good one. It is so nice to see a drama/comedy that is topical, original and just quirky enough to be completely fresh.

Hello, My Name Is Doris.  Simply charming, and great!

MOVIE REVIEW - My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

The first time you hear a real funny joke, you laugh hard, maybe even hysterically. Then second time, you can't recover that huge laugh.  That's the problem here.

The original in this franchise was really, really funny.  This is not.  Wow, the first 30 minutes of this is so bad, it's almost walk-out-able.  This is nothing but a series of Greek jokes and cliches that get old right out of the gate.  There are some laughs, but mostly this is rehash of stale old hash that once was tasty.  The entire original cast is back (which is amazing) since it's been about 15 years.  And there is some introducing of some new characters, but it doesn't matter.

Here we go again, a wedding in the family and unlike the first, this is boring and flat. It is stunning to me that the makers of this didn't see all of this coming, and have second thoughts. This basically flopped at the box office, and will slip nquietly into Bad Idea Land, where it will lay motionless harmlessly forever.

MBFGW2 -  Same characters, same jokes, same premise, not the same result. Painful at times.

MOVIE REVIEW - Batman V Superman

Interesting movie to review, because fans of these kind of movies and characters love every frame of this movie before they ever walk into the theater.

This movie is being met with not so good reviews, and that is apt.  Yes, there are some really cool things about this movie.  I am not bothered by Ben Affleck as Batman. Henry Cavill is fine as  Superman again.  And the supporting cast such as Jessie Eiesenberg, Diane Lane, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and especially Jeremy Irons are among the best things in this movie.  It's just a shame they couldn't put the cherry on the sundae.

This movie, for the first two hours cruises along and is pretty entertaining and smart. Then at about the 2 hour mark, they dumb this thing down to about a th grade level, and the whole thing not only becomes silly, but actually LOOKS silly.  50 year old Godzilla movies look today about as silly as this does, only the effects are better here because of technology.

Why?  What were they thinking?  The final crescendo is so dumb I forgot I was watching the same movie from the hour previous.  And Wonder Woman  (Gal Gadot)  is introduced here that is no secret. She's beautiful to be sure.  But fighting this possible end of the world battle in virtually no clothes just looked ridiculous, despite her real beauty.  This veers so far into the dumb end of the pool it boggles the mind.

This is set up now for more Justice League movies and there will be more.  Many more.  Hopefully they will keep their thinking caps on till the very end.  This CG fest does have some incredible effects and does have some nice angles to it. But overall, this gets worse as the minutes tick by.

Batman V Superman.  Proof that even a can't miss idea, can be messed up.

MOVIE REVIEW - The Bronze

Here comes a small movie that has a ton of local flavor in it, The Bronze.

But a word of caution up front.  This movie although a "gymnastics" movie, is a HARD R rated flick.  Quite frankly this is a pretty funny, naughty movie that isn't for everyone, as this has tons of highly offensive dialogue, and some crude sight gags as well.  But this did make me laugh.

This is the story of Hope.  She was a bronze medalist in the 2004 Olympics as a gymnast. She pulled off a miracle much like the real life Kerri Strug did in 1996, but competing with a badly injured foot.  Hope is from Amherst, Ohio and was supposed to win the gold that year.  So her career ended and she is now years older, and severely bitter about the old says. She hates pretty much everything and everyone.  She is back in her hometown and is a completely out of control, horrible to be around narcissist.  She is then charged with coaching the next possible Olympic champion, Maggie who is also from Amherst.  Will Hope lose her mantle as her little towns "darling?"

This certainly is not a perfect movie, and it will miss the mark with many.  The crudeness is hard to take after a while, and does get very old.  But this is funny parody at times of the entire gymnastics climate.  Haley Lu Richardson is very funny as the overenthusiastic Maggie, and the entire ensemble cast is pretty darn good. This was filmed in Amherst, and that's fun to see, and there is a nice use of an eclectic musical soundtrack.  This may be about 15 minutes too long as well, shorter would have been a bit better.

The Bronze. It doesn't medal at all, but does have a nice showing.  Being honest, I did see some people walk out, I believe because of the crude and crass.  But this does have its moments, and will strike a humor chord with the right audience.

MOVIE REVIEW - Zootopia

I don't review many animated movies, simply because..I mean what are you gonna say?  Criticize movies made specifically for kids and families?  Please!

But curiosity got the best of me, and I saw Zootopia this week after two really huge box office weekends and I'm glad I did.  I am not a fan of all Disney movies, but there are some that really cut through.  Zootopia is funny, and exceptionally well animated.  A very fun script and a ton a really vivid imagination.  It's good for the kids, but also is high enough for adults to like it too.

Really terrific performances from a whole bevy of Hollywood actors voice talent, wonderful music and just a whole lot of fun.  This movie also does make its share of social commentary but that's not unusual for Disney. But it doesn't get in the way of the fun.  Disney also takes some nice shots at itself,  and that always makes me laugh.

Zootopia. Take the family, take everyone you know, and go see this in the theater.

MOVIE REVIEW - Divergent: Allegiant

Can we just stop this nonsense right now?   Clearly not, there is going to be one more of these.

The latest in the Divergent series is a great example of a franchise that has gone on too long.  Even the people IN this movie look bored on screen.  They have tried to breathe new life into this by adding bigger name actors in newer roles, but these keep getting worse.  The entire story is not strong enough.  This series is like the obnoxious last guy that won't leave your party after all the great people have left.  In our case, Hunger Games have come and gone, and Divergent simply will not go home.  And is boring you to tears, while you really want to go to bed. This series has been beaten to a pulp and beaten to the punch by many other series.

What they have been able to hide so far, they can't anymore. Shailene Woodley.  She has always been badly miscast in this series. She is a nice young actress, but she has not the screen presence to carry this series. But in fairness, I am not sure anyone can.  I have really liked here in other smaller movies, and that's her strength.  But she's no Jennifer Lawrence, who is a star. Woodley is too small, too meek, and too much of a supporting actress to make this work. They also can't hide the  whole "end of the world" thing being old, and beyond tired.  This is simply a poor man's Hunger Games.  And that's a bad place to be, and not her fault.

They do attempt to answer questions, and some of them are interesting but the payoff so far is not worth it. There is also some of this that looks ridiculous, it looks like Woodley playing dress up, and would someone please show her how to run? It's hard to watch.  Plus, a scene where she shows up guns-a-blazin' near the end is borderline laughable.

Divergent:Allegiant.  The time has come to wrap this up, and let time forget these were ever made, as we watch Hunger Games on cable in the years ahead.

MOVIE REVIEW - 10 Cloverfield Lane

This is a terrific movie.  Finally a movie that is no where near believable, but very stirring and suspenseful.

This downright scary movie stars usually the funnyman  John Goodman, as he very skillfully plays a real creepy psychopath.  His performance is nothing short of amazing here, as you are wondering the whole time how this goofball is going to eventually going to meld in with the original Cloverfield premise from years ago.

Goodman plays Howard.  He is a paranoid retired Navy man who has spent years building this very sophisticated underground fallout shelter on his property in rural Louisiana.  He ends up there with Emmet and Michelle both around 20.  He will not let them escape the shelter as he has them convinced that an invasion or attack of some kind has happened and it is not safe to be outside.  These scenes are well done, creepy, suspenseful and prey on what would actually scare you.

Of course Howard is too creepy to stay cooped up with, and an escape plan is underway, but if they are successful, what will they find outside?  Is Howard right?  Or is he just some pervy nut-job?  This part of the movie is very well done because you really don't know where this is going, or what lies beyond.

Goodman is stellar here, and is in a role you really have not seen him in before.  This is very well written, and does keep you guessing.  It eventually takes you to a nice payoff, and I'll leave it at that.  This is a good afternoon at the movies, and should be a big hit.

10 Cloverfield Lane. Not award show worthy, but finally a scary suspenseful movie that is legit, and very well done.

MOVIE REVIEW - London Has Fallen

This is going to be the poster child for a movie that critics are going to hate, and fans are going to love, love, love.  And the difference will be large.

London Has Fallen is the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen a couple years ago.  That action packed movie was about as insulting as a movie could be.....until this one.  This stars Gerard Butler as Secret Service superstar Mike Banning, as he protects the same president again, played by Aaron Eckart. This time the very realistic terrorists are killing thousands in London, and have killed countless world leaders with a hugely calculated attack.  The bowels of British intelligence has been infiltrated, and no one really seems to know who is who.

This is the second movie in a row in this series, where everyone who works for the Secret Service. and now British MI-5, looks like a complete and incompetent moron, so our star character can look heroic.  I'm fine with a fantasy look at world turmoil.  James Bond movies have done it for years.  But this is insulting.  This is simply 95 minutes of a movie, where 85 is nonstop action.  They really don't have time to be bothered with much else.

Being fair, there is no lack of action, and much of it really good and well done.  But there is so much killing, and so much mind numbing violence the audience resorted to laughing at much of it. And the theater was packed.  Then the script called for wise-cracking one liners from the President, and our hero, and it sort of turned into a laugh fest.  Last time I checked, terrorism isn't funny.  But these two have no problem joking their way through it.

These are not supposed to be serious, and to be honest with you as a movie, it can't really be taken as such.  But this is escapism, and sometimes we need that.  Sometimes we need a hero that makes the USA proud, and as silly as much of this is, they do that aspect quite well.   This will not be confused with Bond, or even Jack Ryan movies.  They are their own, and they own it.

This though has to be said.  Lots of big names for no reason.  Angela Basset is barely in it.  Morgan Freeman too.  Oscar winner  Mellisa Leo is the Secretary Of Defense.  I don't know if she has a single line, and spends the ENTIRE movie looking sacred and terrified in a locked room.  That insults about everyone for every reason.

London Has Fallen.   The good news is fans will love this movie.   True fantasy escapism.

MOVIE REVIEW - Miracles From Heaven

Jennifer Garner stars in the new family spiritual drama, Miracles From Heaven new this week.

It's that time of the year where we get a few movies with this theme, along with some Biblical releases and they generally do well with fans, but many times not so much with critics. This movie is "based on actual events," as most of these are.  And that phrase alone is open to interpretation, but that's OK too.  This deals with a real life little girl who is diagnosed with a basically terminal condition, who needs a miracle to intervene.

Garner stars as a dedicated Texas mother of three young girls, who is married to a veterinarian.  The middle child, Anna becomes horribly ill with a digestive disorder that seemingly has no cure, and no real treatment.  She seeks out the best doctors in the world to try to save Anna.  And just as it seemed all would be lost, Anna has another trauma.  She falls 30 feet into a hollow tree, and is feared dead.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Somehow she is remarkably uninjured and even more so, is cured of her digestive disorder. Anna later claims that she had an out of body experience and is told by God, she will survive and be cured.  Truth be told, Anna still is alive today, 4 years later and is shown with her family at the end of the movie.  Whatever happened -  happened. Something did, she's still here.

This is a spiritual movie to be sure, and yes some of this is poorly written with dialogue that sounds preachy and unnatural.  But the lions share of this is simply a movie. A story playing out for your analyzing without being highly manipulative or deeply agenda laden.  Garner continues to take on roles that are natural to her these days, and big kudos here to Kylie Rogers who plays little Anna and gives a nice performance in a very large role for a kid.  Nice job too from Eugenio Derbez who is Anna's doctor, who does a lot with some mediocre writing of his character.

Miracles From Heaven.  Family movie.  Not everything wins an Oscar, but there's nothing really wrong here.

MOVIE REVIEW - Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot

Seems to be the season for true stories to come to the movies, and that is the case with this new Tina Fey flick.

Fey stars in the true story of Kim.  She is a 42 year-old single, never married news reporter for an unnamed TV network in New York City.  She has a boring job and is at a crossroads in her life from top to bottom.  So she volunteers to be an in bed reporter deep inside Afghanistan in the early days of the war in Middle East. The gig is for three months.  But it turns out to be over three years.

This is a story worth telling as she leads an interesting life there.  It shows the difficulties that women face in this part of the world.  And it does open our eyes to what these people go through to bring us the stories on the news every night. Problem is, WTF simply goes through the motions and fails to be the compelling story it should have been.  In short, it should have been as interesting as the stories it claims to have covered in real life.

This movie kind of just lays there and it doesn't grab you and pull you in like it should.  Fey is fine, but this role required far more than fine.  It's a big role, and for some reason Fey just can't break away from being "Tina Fey" from SNL at times.  This attempted legit flick dips into sophomoric dialogue and antics from Fey at times that don't make this better, just more average.

This is a movie that is supposed to show incredible personal growth of this brave, but flawed woman. But instead it shows her in this movie as another average character on film, when I'm sure she is far more in person.

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot.  Should have been far better.

MOVIE REVIEW - Eddie The Eagle

It is so good to see a nice movie that is a solid PG-13, made for families, based on a true story and embraced by the national critics.

I would have no matter what "they" would have said.  This is a pretty good mid-winter movie that will be a very nice day at the movies.  This is based on the amazing an true story of Britain's Eddie Edwards and his ski jumping at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.  For those not around then, Eddie made a big splash as an underdog at the games, and in life.

Taron Egerton stars as the awkward Eddie who enlists the help of an old American, shamed ski jumper, Bronson Peary, skillfully played by Hugh Jackman.  Eddie defies all odds and somehow makes it to Calgary overcoming the obstacles posed by life, by time and even by his own country.

They don't make a lot of movies about ski jumping, and that was a big enough challenge in itself.  This is done very well, in every regard.  This is filmed wonderfully, written well, and our main performances are terrific.  This will be a nice memory if you can recall Calgary 1988, and a wonderful learning tool if you do not.  True stories are always fun to tell, especially when we revisit something worth remembering.

Eddie The Eagle.  Very well done.
